Released by: University of Maine at Machias

Release Date: April 04, 2007

Machias, Maine -- Five area business owners will join the president of GrowSmart Maine to talk about the Washington County economy in a special panel at the University of Maine at Machias on Thursday, April 19, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Called the Business Owners and Policy Makers' Forum, the event takes place at UMM's Performing Arts Center. It is free and open to the public. The forum is timed to coordinate with the next-day (April 20-21) Washington County Business Conference at the Washington County Community College in Calais.

The speakers at UMM include Alan Caron, president of GrowSmart Maine. He will present findings from the recent Brookings Institution study of the Maine economy. Responding to him will be five local business owners, who will discuss the economic challenges faced each day by community leaders and small business entrepreneurs both.

The panel represents a diversity of Washington County businesses including retail, natural resource-based, manufacturing and technology. Those are David Whitney of Whitney's Tool Shed in Machias; Lyle Guptill of Guptill's Logging Supply in East Machias; Meg McGarvey of The Commons in Eastport; Dean Crossman of Little River Lobster Co. in Cutler; and Susan Corbett of Axiom Technologies in Jonesport.

The entire Brookings' report for Maine is available online at www.brookings.edu/metro/maine.
